Conclusion

The reason behind creating the prototype at and early stage in the research was to aid the research by evaluating what was missing and should be included and considered to be used on the web site.

Prototype

With some research undertaken I was starting to get bogged down with information and what I wanted the final product to be. The best thing for me was to get some of the ideas that I had from research and start putting them into a prototype. The interface was designed to be navigated around using a Sony Ericsson K800i that uses the opera mini. Opera mini is a third party piece of software that can display web pages in the best possible way for the screen size. It is also customised for the make and model of mobile phone used. This application is available to be used on a large variety of phones.

The web site which has been named My Mobile Movies (www.mmm.com) had a clear purpose. The site is initially divided into four categories.

Preview Trailers
Reviews
Local Cinema
Future Releases

These four menu options would be displayed as icons on the index page. Here on after the navigation and layout would change slightly but still be inkeeping with the visual identity/design.

When I was considering the navigation of the web site and the restrictions that exist in comparison to a keyboard and mouse I had to think of how to make the information from other categories accessable if appropriate. For example on the preview trailer categorythere is a links that can access the comments part of the site or the cinema search part.

Research into interfaces with limited contol for navigation

This section will look at interfaces that use limted controls to navigate around their interface.

The first interface I will look at is the Apple Ront Row interface. It is controlled by using a 4 way directional remote that has an enter key in the middle. Navigation is simple and can be adapted to navigation on a mobile phone (using the directional joystick/buttons and soft keys). The intial screen is made up of rotating icons and you navigate by presing the left or right key on the remote. You then press the enter button (locatd on the middle of the directional buttons) and the format changes to show navigation options in a list format.

The Sony Ericsson interface use mainly icons to show the different categories and then goes into sub menus which are listed rather than graphical icons. Navigation takes place using the directional joystick and the 2 soft keys to enter and go back. The joystick can also be pushed down to enter throught the different categories.

The Nokia interface is similar to the Sony Ericsson. An interesting point toconsider is that all the interface so far work on a system of first showing menu options as large icons, then the sub menus are mad up by using tab menu's and lists.

Research into mobile phone web interfaces

Within this section I will identify any issues that occur whilst using a small screen to access the internet. To view the screen shots examples of accessing the internet on a mobile phone, click on the link 'mobile phone web interface' in the flikr category on the left hand side. The photograpghs were taken whilst viewing the internet on a Sony Ericsson K800i. There are also screen shots of web browsing through the opera mini application which can be downloaded through a mobile phone. It displays web pages on a small screen much better.
